The southernmost inhabited island of French Polynesia, a rugged volcanic speck of around 500 people in the Austral group, far south of Tahiti. Its dramatic ridgelines are crowned with the earthworks of ancient fortified hilltops, and its deep bay at Ahurei is one of the most isolated harbours in the Pacific.
Rapa Iti was settled by Polynesians who, uniquely in the region, built fortified hilltop pā, evidence of past conflict over scarce resources on the small island. European contact and introduced disease sharply reduced the population in the 19th century.
