Qeshm is the main town of Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, the largest island in the Persian Gulf, with an international airport and a port. The island is known for its geopark, mangroves and eroded canyon landscapes.
Qeshm's position at the mouth of the Gulf made it strategically important for controlling maritime trade, and it saw Portuguese and later regional powers contest the strait. It is today a free-trade zone.
