A fishing port on the coast of Santa Cruz in Argentine Patagonia, set at the mouth of a river estuary, with an airport and a harbor. The estuary is a nature reserve rich in penguins, sea lions and seabirds. Boat trips explore its islands.
The estuary was named 'Desire' by the English navigator Thomas Cavendish in 1586. Charles Darwin visited during the Beagle voyage, and the town later grew as a wool-shipping and fishing port.
