Puerto Barrios is Guatemala's main Caribbean port city, with a seaport on the Bay of Amatique and a small airport (PBR). Ferries run from here to the Garifuna town of Livingston.
The town was built in the late 19th century as a railway and banana terminus for the United Fruit Company. It remains an important cargo gateway on the Atlantic coast.
