A Gulf-coast town in Yucatan state that serves as the beach and port for nearby Merida. Its cruise and cargo pier extends several kilometers offshore into the shallow Gulf waters.
Progreso was founded in 1871 to give Yucatan a modern harbor for exporting henequen (sisal) fiber. Its long pier was built in the 20th century because the coastal waters are too shallow for large ships to dock near shore.
