The lone research base of the wind-scoured Kerguelen Islands
The main base on the Kerguelen Islands — the 'Desolation Islands' — a French sub-Antarctic archipelago far out in the southern Indian Ocean with no indigenous or permanent population. It houses scientists and support staff, whose numbers rise and fall with the seasons across a treeless landscape of tundra, glaciers and relentless wind.
Kerguelen was discovered by the French navigator Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen-Trémarec in 1772; later visited by Captain Cook, who dubbed it the 'Islands of Desolation'. Port-aux-Français was established in the 1950s as part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, and the islands have been used for sealing, whaling and, today, scientific research.
