The largest of the Pontine Islands off the Lazio coast, with a colorful crescent-shaped harbor carved from soft rock. Ferries and hydrofoils link it to ports such as Anzio and Formia; there is no airport.
Ponza was colonized by the Romans, who cut tunnels and cisterns still visible today, and later resettled by the Bourbons in the 18th century. Fishing and boatbuilding shaped its village.
