An Inuit hamlet at the gateway to Sirmilik's fjords
An Inuit community of around 1,600 people, known in Inuktitut as Mittimatalik, on the north coast of Baffin Island in Nunavut. Ringed by mountains, glaciers and iceberg-filled waters, it is a gateway to Sirmilik National Park and the spring 'floe edge', where the sea ice meets open water and wildlife concentrates.
The area has been home to Inuit and their predecessors for thousands of years; the modern hamlet grew in the 20th century around trading, missions and later government services. It remains a strongly Inuktitut-speaking community with a living hunting culture.
