Pogradec, Albania

A lakeside town on Albania's shore of ancient Lake Ohrid

Pogradec sits on the southwestern shore of Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, shared between Albania and North Macedonia. It is a relaxed resort town with a long lakefront promenade, pebble beaches and views across the water to the Macedonian mountains. The lake is famous for its endemic koran trout, a local delicacy served in the town's fish restaurants.

The region around Lake Ohrid has been settled since antiquity, and nearby lies the ancient site linked to the Illyrian and later Roman settlement of the area. Pogradec grew as a lakeside market town and during the communist era became a popular domestic holiday resort. Just south of town, the archaeological site of Lin sits on a peninsula with early Christian mosaics, part of the wider Lake Ohrid UNESCO World Heritage area.
