Bali's quiet north — coral restoration, Java sea views, and Menjangan Island's walls

Pemuteran is a small village on Bali's northwest coast sheltered by the Prapat Agung headland, looking out over the Java Sea toward East Java's volcanoes. It's best known as the gateway to Menjangan Island (West Bali National Park), where pristine coral walls drop 50m, and as the home of the world's largest Biorock coral restoration project — solar-powered steel frames that have restored damaged sections of the bay's reef since 2000.

Pemuteran's coral restoration project began after El Niño bleaching killed significant portions of the bay's reef in 1997–98. Local dive operator Yos Amerta partnered with marine biologist Dr. Tom Goreau to install the first Biorock structures in 2000 — now 60+ structures and a global model for reef restoration. The village's entire economy pivoted from fishing to conservation-based dive tourism over two decades.
