Low-key main village of the Ha'apai islands
Pangai is the administrative center of Tonga's Ha'apai group on Lifuka island, served by Salote Pilolevu Airport and a small harbor. The surrounding low coral islands are known for quiet beaches and shallow reefs.
The Ha'apai islands were a base for the young Tāufaʻāhau, later King George Tupou I, who unified Tonga in the 19th century. The nearby waters were also the setting of the 1789 mutiny on the Bounty.
