Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Polynesia's last kingdom — coral roads and royal protocol

Nuku'alofa is the capital of the only Pacific kingdom never colonised — Tonga's royal family has ruled unbroken for centuries. The city is refreshingly unhurried: the Royal Palace sits on the waterfront, the Talamahu Market overflows with taro, sea grapes, and woven pandanus, and Sunday is so quiet that even the internet slows down out of respect.

Tonga is the only Pacific nation never colonised by a foreign power, and Nuku'alofa has been its royal capital since the 19th century. The Tu'i Tonga dynasty ruled for over 1,000 years before unification under the Tupou dynasty in 1845. Nuku'alofa gained international attention when Abel Tasman arrived in 1643, followed by Captain Cook who named it the 'Friendly Islands' after the warm reception he received — though Tongan oral history suggests a conspiracy to kill Cook was only narrowly averted.
