An industrial city of around 175,000 in the far north of Krasnoyarsk Krai, well above the Arctic Circle — the northernmost city in the world with a population over 150,000. Built on permafrost around some of the planet's richest nickel, copper and palladium deposits, it endures polar nights, extreme cold and severe pollution.
Norilsk grew from the 1930s around the Norillag forced-labour camp, whose prisoners built the mines and the city itself under brutal Arctic conditions. It remains a 'closed city', with access by foreigners tightly restricted, and is one of the most polluted places on Earth due to its smelting industry.
