A tropical fishing port on the deep clear water of Lake Malawi
Nkhata Bay is a lakeside town on the northwestern shore of Lake Malawi, set around a series of forested coves and a busy fishing harbour. The lake here is deep, clear and rich with colourful endemic cichlid fish, making it a favourite spot for snorkelling, diving, kayaking and swimming. Its relaxed, tropical atmosphere and lakeshore lodges have made it a well-loved stop on the East African backpacker route.
The town lies in a region historically home to the Tonga people and grew as a fishing settlement and small port on Lake Malawi. It became a stop on the lake's steamer routes, including the long-running MV Ilala ferry that still links communities along the shore. Fishing remains central to local life, alongside a modest tourism trade built around the lake's clear waters and beaches.
