A town in western Suriname on the Nickerie River near the Guyana border, with an airstrip and a river harbor, and a ferry crossing toward Guyana. It is the center of Suriname's rice-growing district. Flat farmland and polders surround it.
Nieuw Nickerie was rebuilt inland after coastal erosion threatened an earlier settlement. It became the hub of a major rice and banana agricultural region worked by a diverse population of Surinamese origins.
