A deep-harbour sailing town in Tonga's whale-watching islands
Neiafu is the main town of the Vava'u island group in northern Tonga, set beside the Port of Refuge, one of the finest natural harbours in the South Pacific. Its sheltered, island-studded waters make it a renowned base for yachting, sailing and sea kayaking. From roughly July to October, humpback whales gather to breed nearby, and Vava'u is one of the few places in the world where visitors can swim with them under licence.
The Vava'u islands have been settled by Tongans for millennia and were an important seat of chiefly power in the Tongan archipelago. European contact came with explorers including the Spaniard Francisco Mourelle in 1781 and later Captain Cook's successors, and the deep inlet was named the Port of Refuge for its shelter. Neiafu grew as the trading and administrative centre of the northern islands and today anchors Vava'u's fishing, copra and tourism economy.
