A red city on the Pechora delta near the Barents Sea
Naryan-Mar is the capital of the Nenets region in the far north of European Russia, set on the Pechora River just short of the Barents Sea, above the Arctic Circle. Its name means 'red town' in the Nenets language, and it serves the reindeer-herding communities of the surrounding tundra.
The town was built up in the 1930s as a Soviet river port and timber centre. It stands not far from the ruins of Pustozersk, founded in 1499 as the first Russian town in the Arctic and long since abandoned — a site associated with the exile and 1682 execution of the Old Believer leader Avvakum.
