South Greenland's green valley town amid Norse ruins
Narsaq is a small town in the fjords of far southern Greenland, set in one of the mildest, greenest corners of the island. The surrounding valleys support sheep farming and are dotted with the ruins of the Norse Eastern Settlement founded more than a thousand years ago.
This region was the heart of Erik the Red's Norse colony, established around AD 985; Brattahlíð, his farm at nearby Qassiarsuk across the fjord, is one of the best-known Norse sites in Greenland. After the Norse vanished, the area was resettled by Inuit, and Narsaq grew into a modern fishing and farming town.
