Quiet river valley of Lanna temples and mural-painted Wat Phumin
Nan is a laid-back provincial town set in a remote river valley of far northern Thailand, near the Laos border and long isolated by surrounding mountains. Its best-loved sight is Wat Phumin, a cruciform temple whose 19th-century murals include the famous 'Whisper of Love' scene, while the golden Wat Phra That Chae Haeng overlooks the valley from a nearby hill. The province is known for Tai Lue weaving, coffee, and the Doi Phu Kha mountains beyond.
Nan was once a small semi-independent kingdom (Nanthaburi) on the eastern fringe of the Lanna world, later a tributary principality with its own rulers, only fully absorbed into Siam in the early 20th century. That separate history shows in its distinctive Tai Lue culture and temple art.
