Deep natural harbour on the northern Mozambique coast
A northern Mozambican port with one of the deepest natural harbours on the East African coast, terminus of a railway carrying coal from the interior. It has an airport and beaches along its wide bay.
Developed as a deep-water port under Portuguese colonial rule, it later anchored a rail corridor linking landlocked Malawi and Zambia to the sea. Port and rail upgrades have driven recent growth.
