Mytilene is the main town and port of the island of Lesbos, served by Mytilene International Airport 'Odysseas Elytis' and ferries across the northeast Aegean. A Genoese-Byzantine castle overlooks its harbor.
Lesbos was home to the ancient poets Sappho and Alcaeus in the 7th and 6th centuries BC. Mytilene later flourished under Byzantine and Genoese rule, which left the fortress guarding the town.
