Mykines, Faroe Islands

The westernmost Faroe island — a green wall of cliffs packed with puffins and gannets, reached only by a weather-dependent boat or helicopter

Mykines is the westernmost of the Faroe Islands, home to a single tiny village of the same name and only a handful of year-round residents. It is the most celebrated seabird island in the Faroes: in summer its grassy sea cliffs host tens of thousands of Atlantic puffins, while the outlying islet of Mykineshólmur — reached by a footbridge over a gorge and a walk to a lighthouse — holds the country's only northern gannet colony. Access is by a small passenger ferry or the state helicopter, both often cancelled by fog and swell.

Mykines was settled by Norse and for centuries sustained itself on seabird harvesting, sheep and fishing, its people famously lowering themselves down the cliffs to catch birds and gather eggs. The population has fallen sharply through the 20th and 21st centuries as families moved to the main islands, leaving a village kept alive largely by summer visitors.
