Peninsula port on Lake Victoria's eastern shore
A town on a peninsula jutting into Lake Victoria in northern Tanzania's Mara Region, surrounded by water on three sides. It has a lake port and lies on the road route toward the Serengeti's eastern reaches.
It grew as a colonial-era administrative and fishing port on the lake. The region is the birthplace of Tanzania's first president, Julius Nyerere, who is buried nearby at Butiama.
