Diving and WWII-history base in the Western Province
A village and small town on New Georgia Island in the Solomons' Western Province, ringed by reefs and wartime relics. It has an airport built on an old wartime strip and a harbour serving dive resorts and inter-island boats.
Its airfield was seized by Japanese forces and retaken by the Allies in fierce 1943 fighting, leaving wrecks and bunkers across the area. Today it is a base for reef diving in Roviana Lagoon.
