Garden Route harbour with early European landfall history
A coastal town at the western end of South Africa's Garden Route, set on a sheltered bay with a working harbour and beaches. It is one of the earliest points of European contact on the South African coast.
Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias landed here in 1488, and sailors later left messages in a boot under a milkwood tree that became a post office. The town grew as a port and, later, a fishing and holiday centre.
