A coastal town at the western end of South Africa's Garden Route, with a working harbor and sheltered swimming beaches. It has a small airport for regional and charter flights.
Mossel Bay was the first landfall of Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias in 1488, and an old post-office tree marks early sailors' message drops. It later grew as a fishing and, more recently, gas-processing port.
