Morogoro was a significant station on the 19th-century Arab and Swahili trade route from the coast to Lake Tanganyika — ivory and enslaved people moved through the valley. German East Africa made it a railway junction on the Central Line (Dar es Salaam to Kigoma), which remains the city's economic lifeline.
