Northern Afghan city of the celebrated Blue Mosque
Mazar-i-Sharif is northern Afghanistan's largest city and a regional trade center near the Uzbek border. It is known for the tiled Shrine of Ali (the Blue Mosque) and has an international airport.
The city grew around the shrine, believed by many to hold the tomb of Ali, which drew pilgrims from the 15th century onward. It became the leading city of the northern plains.
