Matmata is a small Berber-speaking town in the hills of southern Tunisia, famous for its troglodyte pit-dwellings — homes dug 6 to 10 metres straight down into the soft sandstone, with rooms carved into the walls of the central courtyard. The design is ancient but practical: the underground structure maintains a near-constant temperature even when the surface above cooks at 50°C. The troglodyte settlement of Matmata was inhabited by Berber (Amazigh) communities for at least a thousand years before the Romanisation of North Africa. The distinctive pit-house design, while unique to this area of Tunisia, follows the same logic as other underground dwellings in hot, arid climates: earth is the best insulator available. The region came under Arab influence in the 7th century AD but Berber culture and the Shilha dialect remained dominant.
