Mariehamn is the capital of the autonomous Åland Islands, served by Mariehamn Airport and busy ferry ports linking Sweden and mainland Finland. It sits between two natural harbors.
Founded in 1861 and named after Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna, the town became a center of the great windjammer sailing fleets. The museum ship Pommern, a four-masted barque, is moored in its western harbor.
