The pearl of the far-flung Gambier Islands
The main island of the Gambier Islands in the extreme southeast of French Polynesia, home to around 1,200 people around the village of Rikitea. A high island set inside a huge lagoon and barrier reef, it is a centre for black-pearl farming and carries an extraordinary legacy of 19th-century mission architecture.
In the 1830s and 1840s the French Catholic missionary Father Honoré Laval oversaw the building of dozens of churches and other stone structures on Mangareva using local labour, including the coral-and-lime St Michael's Cathedral at Rikitea, decorated with mother-of-pearl. The programme transformed and, in the process, devastated the local society.
