Magdeburg is the capital of Saxony-Anhalt on the Elbe river, with an inland port and the vast Magdeburg Water Bridge canal crossing nearby. Its cathedral was the first Gothic church built on German soil.
Emperor Otto the Great made Magdeburg a power centre in the 10th century and is buried in its cathedral. The city was largely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and again in World War II.
