Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India and is served by Madurai Airport. It is centred on the Meenakshi Amman Temple.
The city was the capital of the ancient Pandya kingdom and a hub of classical Tamil learning. Its towering temple complex was largely rebuilt under the Nayak rulers in the 16th and 17th centuries.
