Lugano, Switzerland

Switzerland's Italian soul — palm trees, lake light, and Monte San Salvatore

Lugano sits at the northern tip of Lake Lugano in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, giving it a Mediterranean character unlike anywhere else in Switzerland — palm-lined promenades, gelato, espresso culture, and a tax-haven serenity. The old town clusters around Piazza della Riforma, and Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè provide panoramic rides via funicular. The LAC cultural centre on the waterfront is one of Switzerland's finest contemporary arts spaces, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza art collection was here for decades.

Lugano's position at the cultural crossroads of Italian and Swiss life shaped a city that was part of the Duchy of Milan before the Swiss cantons conquered it in 1512. It served as a refuge for Italian political exiles during the Risorgimento — Mazzini plotted here — and in the 20th century became one of Europe's discreet financial centres for private banking and wealth management. The area was bombed accidentally by US aircraft in 1944.
