Baja's first mission town by the Sea of Cortez
A small Baja California Sur town on the Sea of Cortez, backed by the Sierra de la Giganta mountains. It has its own international airport and a marina, and is a base for visiting the nearby bay islands.
Loreto was founded in 1697 as the first permanent Spanish mission in the Californias and served as the region's capital until 1777. Much of the original town was damaged by hurricanes and earthquakes over the following centuries.
