Baja's first mission town
Loreto sits on the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur, with Loreto International Airport (LTO) and a marina fronting a protected marine park. It is a quiet colonial town below the Sierra de la Giganta.
Founded in 1697, Loreto was the first Spanish mission and capital of the Californias, the launch point for missions across the peninsula and Alta California. It lost its capital status after an early-19th-century hurricane.
