Guanacaste's white-city gateway
Liberia is the capital of Costa Rica's Guanacaste province, served by Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR), a major gateway to the northern Pacific beaches. It is nicknamed the 'White City.'
Founded in 1769 at a cattle-ranching crossroads, Liberia grew as the heart of Guanacaste's sabanero (cowboy) culture. Its whitewashed adobe houses gave it its nickname.
