Savanna border town with airstrip near Brazil
A town in the Rupununi savanna of southwestern Guyana, on the border with Brazil, with an airstrip and a road link to Brazil across the Takutu River. It serves the surrounding ranching and Indigenous communities. It is a gateway to the interior savanna and forests.
Lethem grew as a frontier cattle-ranching and trading center in the Rupununi. A bridge over the Takutu River, completed in 2009, formalized the crossing to Brazil.
