Fortified harbor town on Brittany's Belle-Ile

The main town of Belle-Ile-en-Mer off southern Brittany, dominated by the star-shaped Citadelle Vauban above its harbor. Ferries connect it to Quiberon on the mainland, and the island has a small aerodrome.

Le Palais's citadel was reinforced by the military engineer Vauban in the 17th century to guard the Breton coast. The island later drew painters such as Claude Monet.
