Las Palmas is the largest city in Spain's Canary Islands, on Gran Canaria in the Atlantic off northwest Africa. It has Gran Canaria Airport and the Port of La Luz, a major Atlantic seaport.
The city was founded in 1478 during the Castilian conquest of Gran Canaria and became a stopover on Atlantic voyages, including one by Christopher Columbus. Its old Vegueta quarter holds the island's oldest churches and the Casa de Colón.
