Lanai City is the only town on the small island of Lanai, set in the cool uplands. Lanai Airport serves the island, and Manele Harbor handles the ferry from Maui.
The town was built in the 1920s as a company town for what became the world's largest pineapple plantation. Pineapple growing ended in the 1990s and the island shifted toward tourism.
