Cobblestoned coppersmith village in the Greater Caucasus
Lahıc (Lahij) is a mountain village in the Ismayilli district of Azerbaijan, tucked into a gorge of the Greater Caucasus and famous for centuries of coppersmithing and metal craft. Its neat cobbled main street is lined with workshops where artisans still hammer and engrave copperware, backed by stone-and-timber houses built to flex in earthquakes. Many residents speak Tat, an Iranian language, a reminder of the village's old ties along Caucasus trade routes.
Reputedly settled well over a thousand years ago, Lahıc grew into a renowned crafts centre — copper, leather and carpets — on a route through the mountains, and is noted for an old stone water-supply and drainage system. Its Tat-speaking community traces its roots to Persian settlers, and the historic core is a protected heritage reserve.
