Sugar-cane hub of Fiji's second-largest island
The main town of Vanua Levu, Fiji's northern island, set amid sugar-cane fields on a river a short way from the coast. It has an airport and a nearby river port, and serves a large Indo-Fijian farming community.
The town grew around a sugar mill established in the early twentieth century, which drew indentured Indian laborers to the surrounding plantations. Sugar remains central to its economy.
