A tiny island community on the wild East Greenland coast
Kulusuk is a small island settlement of a few hundred people off the remote east coast of Greenland, ringed by icebergs and backed by jagged peaks. As the site of the region's airstrip, it is the main gateway to the Ammassalik area and one of the easiest windows onto traditional East Greenlandic life.
The east coast was among the last-settled parts of Greenland, and its Tunumiit people remained largely isolated from European contact until the late 19th century. Kulusuk grew around a former U.S. radar station built during the Cold War, whose airstrip still serves the community and visitors arriving from Iceland.
