Cobblestoned old town beside Europe's widest waterfall
Kuldīga is a small town in the Courland (Kurzeme) region of western Latvia, prized for one of the best-preserved historic centres in the Baltics — a low skyline of red-tiled roofs, timber and brick houses, and cobbled lanes. On the edge of town the Venta river spills over Ventas rumba, the widest waterfall in Europe at roughly 240 metres across, best known for salmon and lamprey that leap upstream in season. A long brick road bridge from 1874 crosses just below it.
Founded in the 13th century by the Livonian Order as Goldingen, Kuldīga became a residence and, briefly, a capital of the Duchy of Courland. Having escaped major destruction in later wars, its 16th-to-18th-century wooden and brick townscape survived largely intact, and the Old Town of Kuldīga was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.
