Skanderbeg's mountain stronghold above an old Ottoman bazaar
Krujë is a hillside town clinging to the slopes of Mount Krujë north of Tirana, wrapped around a medieval castle that is central to Albanian national identity. From this citadel the 15th-century hero Skanderbeg led decades of resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Below the castle, a restored cobbled Ottoman-era bazaar sells carpets, antiques and crafts, with the Adriatic plain spread out far below.
Krujë was the capital of the medieval principality of Arbanon and later the base of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, who from 1443 united Albanian forces and held out against repeated Ottoman sieges until his death in 1468. The castle withstood several major assaults, becoming a lasting symbol of Albanian resistance, though the Ottomans finally took the town after he died. Today the castle houses the Skanderbeg Museum, and the old bazaar beneath it has been restored as a centre of traditional crafts.
