Kristiansund is built across several islands on Norway's northwest coast, linked by the small harbor ferry 'Sundbåten' and served by Kristiansund Airport Kvernberget. It remains an active fishing and offshore-supply port.
The town became wealthy exporting klippfisk (salted dried cod) to Mediterranean markets from the 18th century. It was heavily bombed in 1940 and largely rebuilt in a modernist style.
