Kinsale is a picturesque port town on the coast of County Cork, wrapped around a sheltered harbour at the mouth of the Bandon River. Narrow winding streets of brightly painted houses, craft shops and a strong cluster of seafood restaurants have earned it a reputation as one of Ireland's food capitals. Two 17th-century star forts guard the harbour entrance, and the town marks the start of the Wild Atlantic Way coastal route.
Kinsale grew as a walled medieval port and was the scene of the pivotal Battle of Kinsale in 1601, when English forces defeated a combined Irish and Spanish army — a turning point that hastened the collapse of the old Gaelic order. The star-shaped Charles Fort was built later in the 17th century to defend the harbour. In 1915 the RMS Lusitania was torpedoed offshore, and many victims were brought to and buried near the town; Kinsale later reinvented itself as a yachting and culinary destination.
