A Taymyr river town among the world's northernmost settlements
A remote settlement of roughly 2,500 people on the Khatanga River in the Taymyr Peninsula, one of the northernmost permanent communities on Earth. It is a launch point for expeditions into the high Russian Arctic and toward the North Pole.
The site has long been home to Dolgan and Nganasan peoples and grew around a fur-trading post founded in the 17th century. In the Soviet era it became a regional administrative and aviation hub for the far north.
