Karaikudi is the principal town of Chettinad, a region of southern Tamil Nadu famed for the grand mansions of the Nattukottai Chettiar merchant-banking community. These sprawling courtyard houses were built with Burma teak, Italian marble, Belgian glass and glossy local Athangudi tiles, financed by fortunes made across Southeast Asia. The town is equally celebrated for Chettinad cooking, among the spiciest and most aromatic cuisines in India.
The Chettiars grew wealthy from the 19th century as traders, moneylenders and financiers across British Burma, Ceylon, Malaya and beyond, and they poured that money into ancestral homes in their arid homeland around Karaikudi. Whole villages of ornate mansions rose in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, filled with imported materials that displayed the family's global reach. When the community's overseas fortunes waned after independence and the upheavals in Burma, many houses were left shuttered — and some have since been restored as heritage hotels and museums.
